Sum It Up!  Hopefully, Stacia Kane plans to write another book because this series is addicting!

A DEADLY HIGH

Magic-wielding Churchwitch and secret addict Chess Putnam knows better than anyone just how high a price people are willing to pay for a chemical rush. But when someone with money to burn and a penchant for black magic starts tampering with Downside’s drug supply, Chess realizes that the unlucky customers are paying with their souls—and taking the innocent with them, as the magic-infused speed compels them to kill in the most gruesome ways possible.

As if the streets weren’t scary enough, the looming war between the two men in her life explodes, taking even more casualties and putting Chess squarely in the middle. Downside could become a literal ghost town if Chess doesn’t find a way to stop both the war and the dark wave of death-magic, and the only way to do that is to use both her addiction and her power to enter the spell and chase the magic all the way back to its malevolent source. Too bad that doing so will probably kill Chess—if the war doesn’t first destroy the man who’s become her reason for living. (Goodreads)

Review:
There are characters that you read about that seem real and then there are characters that are real. Chess is very real. It is surprising that Chess has survived for so long in Downside, or even in general. Chess is a tough character to like because she is a drug addict; it is hard to connect with a character that seems so vastly different from everyone around you. Yet it is difficult to not feel something for Chess. Plus, the relationship that has developed between her and Terrible is so touching, and visceral. There are countless couples that people clamor to read the next book for; Chess and Terrible has become that couple for me.

The plot structure for this book is so different from the other books in the series. Instead of following Chess on a debunking case that sort of involves Downside as well, strange things are happening to the people in Downside. Someone has tainted the drugs that the junkies in Downside consume. Chess can tell that there is some magic involved and feels it is her job, because she works for the church, and as a citizen of Downside to try to solve the mystery. There is also the overwhelming conflict between Terrible and Lex. Now that Lex has taken over for his father, he has decided to change the way things are run and that means bad things will happen for Chess and Terrible.
It is hard to describe how captivating and enjoyable this book was to read. It was difficult to put down, yet difficult to continue because there were so many emotions involved. Hopefully, Stacia Kane plans to write another book because this series is addicting!

  1. I'll be honest and say that I just skimmed through this because I'm still catching up with the series. I just finished City of Ghosts and that has got to be my favorite so far. I hope I can get caught up with the series this week.
