Publishing Week: Interview with Tina Reber

NRR: Hi Tina! Thank you for taking the time to join us! As many readers know you have had a lot of success in your self-published novel, Love Unscripted. Can you share with us what made you decide to do self-published rather than a publishing company?

Hi everyone!  Thanks for having me here.  I appreciate it.  What made me decide to self-publish?  Hmm… well two years ago during my 40-something midlife crisis, I started writing a novel.  Once I started, I couldn’t stop.  One of my co-workers was my first reader, and as I wrote, she devoured it.  She was also the person who said, “Hey, did you know that so-and-so from another department wrote a book?  Yeah, he’s self-publishing it.”

That simple “hey” started a conversation and led me to Create Space.  Doing some on-line searching, Create Space was a company recently acquired by Amazon, they were really, really reasonable, and with a bit of work, I could see my “baby” in paper form.  Really, that was all I was going for.   I started out like 99.99% of all hopeful authors – I wanted to see my story in book form.  From there, I handed off my book to friends and family.

The response I got back was overwhelming, so I kept on pushing it.  I made friends with the authors I was streaming with on Amazon.  I started a website, got into social media, and started talking book shop with anyone who had insight or an opinion.

I looked up how to get published with a traditional publishing house, found out that I’d need an agent, found out that I’d have to write a lot of query letters to them, heard all about sitting in “slush piles” until one of them got one of those elusive “round-to-it’s” and gave it a read.  Honestly, that scared the bejesus out of me and like anything scary, I avoided it.  I have half of a query letter started which has never seen the outside of my hard drive.

I published on Kindle last year and kept working my full time job in the meantime while making some really cool author friends and saturating myself in all things books.

NRR: What would you say is one of the hardest/easiest parts of self-published?

Okay, this is totally my opinion… my experiences so far.  Whether you are self-published or traditionally published, there are certain things which you just have to do on your own.  For example, a big trad publisher is not going to make a website for you.  They are not going to give you a nice assistant who blogs, Twitters, and makes Facebook relationships for you.  They are not going to make your platform as an author.  You have to do that.   Suddenly, I went from hopeful author to website designer, business card designer, social media marketing manager, etc.  Still things you do regardless of who is doing the imprint.

Self-publishing was so easy to do via Create Space, anyone with some computer knowledge can follow the instructions and upload a PDF file.  That, a few dollars for a hard copy print and a small membership fee will get you a book in hand.

Let’s talk book cover art.  Now there is a task.  Fortunately I had a friend who had a cousin…  We worked together on what I had hoped to see and then I wrote a check.   After a while, you make contacts in the industry, and you get a cover designer to work for you.   There is a lot of talent out there making awesome book covers.   When you are traditionally published, you have art teams at your disposal but then I’m not sure how much creative control you have.  I honestly don’t know.

NRR: What would you say has helped you the most in promoting your work?

Two words:  BOOK BLOGGERS.   The women (and men) I have come across talking books and posting reviews have done me such a tremendous service, reaching potential readers that I may not have gotten to know otherwise, that I don’t think I’d even be close to where I am without them.   In the last two years, some of my best friends are bloggers whom I’ve never met in person but I talk to all the time.  I’m not just an author/writer – I’m a voracious reader as well.  I look to these relationships just like everyone else does.  I’m looking for the next great “OMG that book rocked” recommendations.  I read YA romance, Adult Romances, and now Erotica.  Hey, don’t judge.  You all are reading it, too.    The book bloggers who first helped me out have characters named after them in my upcoming sequel.  My additional way of saying “Thank You.”

Facebook and Twitter are my daily living spaces.  Well, mostly Facebook.  I’m a people-person.  I need long-winded interaction.  Yeah, I wrote a thick book… whatever.  I had a lot to say J  But personal addictions and predilections aside, these “social media” tools allow me to have relationships with readers all over the globe.  In one day, I typically converse with folks in 12 different countries.   I love, no I LOVE my readers.  They aren’t just readers or customers to me.  They are friends.  We talk, tease, joke, share, laugh, cry, advise, complain, defend… I’m not just promoting a product (a book); I’m promoting me – who I am.  Hopefully you’ll think I’m cool enough to give my thick-ass novel a read.

Lastly, and well nearest and dearest to me, are the relationships that I’ve made with other authors.  I’ve tried to make relationships with some traditionally published folks and it seems like there’s this brick wall between them and “the lazy ones.”  I don’t get it but then again, I didn’t wait years to see if my book would ever make it to print.  Did I take the easy way out?  Tomato/tomahhto…

Then I hooked up with other self-published rebels.  We were like a pack of gypsies, taking in strays and healing the wounded with our homemade medicines.  And somewhere we realized “hey, we share a hell of a lot of readers” and “hey, do you realize that reader tend to read more than one book?”   My readers/your readers – we all have the same goal as authors, right?  Entertain as many people as we can with our stories.

I love my author friends like they were flesh and blood sisters.  I’d go to war with these women and I know that they’d be right aside of me wearing war paint and giving it a heck of a go with me.

So take the advice, authors on solitary islands.  Go make friends.  Earn your friends by being genuine.  Be gold and gold will come back to you.  Karma is real.

NRR: Some readers have animosity toward self-published authors (which I find completely ridiculous since most of my favorite books are written by self-published authors). What advice would you give to aspiring authors who are timid to tread the waters of self-publishing?

I can give all the advice in the world until I’m blue in the face.  What people have to realize is that it doesn’t matter if there’s a publisher name in your book or not.  Look up the word “publish” in the dictionary.  I am a published author.  I did all the work myself.  I share profits with companies like Amazon.  That’s it.   If you are one who has the definitive line drawn in your brain separating “trad” and “indie,” my opinion on self-publishing will do nothing for you.  E-books are THE thing right now.  You don’t even need to put a book into paper these days to be “published.”  Authors are putting out 30 page novellas for $2.99.  So the real choice is do you want to sit on the bench and be mad that you aren’t playing or do you want to get in the game any way you can?

The other plus is I have no deadlines.  I have readers to answer to.  I gave them a date of delivery.  If I don’t deliver, I have a feeling I’ll be lynched by the mob.

NRR: What would you say people over look the most when it comes to self-publishing?

The day has come where self-publishing IS publishing.  Traditionally published authors are self-publishing these day, realizing the profits instead of splitting them with the big houses.  The biggest obstacle I have right now is getting paper and ebooks into other countries and into other languages.  That will be rectified shortly for me as I’ve got some new options.  Other than that, without a big house representing me, I will never see my book in print in Target or Kmart.  But one day (shakes fist at sky) I will have an end cap on aisle 6 next to Electronics.

NRR: Now it's time for me to gush over how much I LOVED Love Unscripted! When can we expect to follow up, Love Unrehearsed?

The sequel to Love Unscripted, Love Unrehearsed, is scheduled to be released on Amazon in paper and in Kindle format on August 31st.  Both novels will be released for Nook and other formats mid to late September, once my agreement with Kindle Prime Lending expires.

I also have 100 pages of the first of my spin-off series written.  There will be three novels stemming from that following the Trent Brothers.  Each will have a cross-over storyline but still could be read as a standalone novel.   I hope to release “Jacked” – which is an adult contemporary romance in the winter.  FYI – it has a wee bit of BD as in BDSM without the SM part.  For some reason I can’t stop writing about being tied up and dominated a bit.  I’ll save the crops, floggers, and other naughty bits for E.L., Christian, and Ana. O.o

And at the same time (I know – crazy) I have 150 pages of the first of a sci-fi romance series started.  So lots of pots are on the stove right now and several really hot alpha guys are vying for my brain space and attention.  I’m entertaining myself writing them so I hope you’ll have that much fun reading them.

Thanks for having me here, NRR.  Hugs and Happy Reading to all.

8/28/12

Interview: Kelly Creagh

NRR: Nevermore was a huge success with readers! Did you feel pressure
in writing the follow up Enshadowed?

I did feel pressure, yes. At the time Nevermore was released,
I was working a lot and trying to balance all the aspects of my life,
including this new and exciting role of being an author! I received a
lot of great feedback on Nevermore and, when I began to write
Enshadowed, I set out with all the hopes and fears that go with wanting
to meet expectations but also do something different. So Enshadowed was
a tough book for me! It’s the second book in a planned trilogy and I had
also never written a sequel. Though there were many things that I knew
needed to happen to further the story, I also wanted to take time to
address some of the loose ends left at the end of Nevermore. The initial
draft of Enshadowed got a pretty substantial rewrite but there are some
very big moments. Though I have always known the ending of this novel,
there was one part of the book toward the end that took me by total
surprise. It might be my favorite moment.

NRR: Are there any aspects to writing in the Young Adult genre that you
find challenging?

Oh yes. Parents. Isobel’s parents are such a large part of her life in
book one, I found it challenging in Enshadowed to keep up that
foundation of a strong relationship and still get Isobel where she
needed to be. I could not discount Isobel’s parents or set them aside in
a convenient way. If for no other reason than that they wouldn’t let me.
This is particularly true for Isobel’s father. But the choices I made in
regards to Isobel’s parents in Enshadowed are helping to make things in
book three quite interesting.

NRR: What do you think the most important thing Isobel has learned
throughout the series so far?

That appearances are misleading, and that there are two sides to
everything. There’s a big theme of duality in Enshadowed. Literal
mirrors and figurative mirrors play a very interesting role.

NRR: What is your guilty pleasure?

Paranormal reality shows. I love them SOOOO. MUCH. My favorites are A
Haunting, Paranormal State, Paranormal Witness, Haunted Collector and
Ghost Hunters. I am so hooked. And I always freak myself out watching
them. Every time.

NRR: What type of atmosphere do you find yourself doing your best
writing in(quiet or background music, morning or night, office or wherever
a laptop can go)?

It might sound weird, but I write best when there are people around me.
So I’m very on the go with my work. Right now I’m sitting in one of my
favorite coffee shops with my noise cancelation headphones on, listening
to moody music. It’s gotten to where they know me well enough here to
predict my drink order. This morning, I even asked my favorite barista a
research question pertaining to book three. On Monday’s, I meet with a
group of area writers and we all chase word count together. So even
though I’m zoned and writing, I like to be in the vicinity of quiet
company. The only time I really lock myself away is during copyedits
which, for me, take an immense amount of time and concentration.

NRR: What are your top three reasons for writing the Nevermore series?

I didn’t set out to write with any specific reason except to tell a
good story. Along the way, though, I think my hope for the Nevermore
trilogy came to include portraying a romance that transcends
stereotyping. Also, sharing what I have learned about the life, work and
legacy of Edgar Allan Poe as well as exploring some darker physiological
elements that are prevalent in Poe’s works and which teens deal with
today, like mortality and the internal conflict of wrong vs. right.

NRR: For those who have not had the chance to read Nevermore series,
can you share the storyline?

Nevermore is the story of a cheerleader who is paired up in her English
class with a goth boy. Together, they must research and prepare a
presentation on a famous literary figure. Varen, the goth boy, insists
on Edgar Allan Poe. Isobel is less enchanted with the decision and,
although she is apprehensive of Varen, she goes along with his plan
because she needs to keep her grades up to stay in cheerleading.
As Varen and Isobel research together, Isobel soon discovers that Poe
died under very mysterious circumstances, disappearing for five days
before being found in a Baltimore gutter, delirious and unable to say
what happened to him. Isobel learns that Poe perished shortly after
being found and that he called out repeatedly for someone no one knew
before passing away.

It soon becomes clear that dark forces were at work in Poe’s demise
and that now, those same dark forces are luring Varen into an alternate
world made of dreams and nightmares, a place where his strange drawings
and stories come to life.

Isobel, who has gradually started to fall for the mysterious and aloof
black-haired, green-eyed goth boy, begins to realize that it is up to
her to save him.

Enshadowed picks up shortly after the end of Nevermore. Isobel has
learned about the Poe Toaster and is now devising a plan to travel to
Baltimore and confront him in the cemetery where Poe is buried.

NRR: What is one thing you would caution readers to reading Enshadowed?

Though re-reading Nevermore might be a good idea, I don’t feel it’s
absolutely necessary. I did my best to recap and add in reminders and
cues from what happened in Nevermore. However, if you want a deeper look
into the literary aspects of Enshadowed, I would highly suggest reading
Poe’s short story The Fall of the House of Usher. Also, if you do go
back and reread Nevermore, keep a close eye on Reynolds whenever he’s on
the page. Events pertaining to his character become very important in
Enshadowed. If you read closely, there are quite a few clues in
Nevermore regarding Mr. Reynolds…

If you haven’t read Nevermore, I would definitely read book one before
venturing into Enshadowed. Enshadowed is a bridge book and was not
written to stand on its own. So, if you haven’t already, be sure to
check out Nevermore first!

NRR: What is next in the works for you?
Currently, I’m hard at work on the third book of the Nevermore trilogy
and having a blast. Everything is coming together and I even think I
know how it ends. After Nevermore, I have a novel I wrote in 2007 that I
want to get back to. It’s very different from Nevermore and, as of yet,
I haven’t seen anything on the shelves similar in concept. So, for right
now, I’m going to be very secretive about that one!

Interview: Jesse Lane

How did you craft the tone (creepy, funny, romantic, etc) of The Burning Star?

Crystal: Humor comes naturally to Melissa. Some situations in the book flowed better with some humor added to it and I think she did a beautiful job adding that to the story. I however am awkward and not funny. So all wonderfully written awkward moments in the story come from me.

What do you think is the most unique thing about Kay?

Melissa: Her perseverance through whatever crosses her path. She attacks her problems head on and she opts to see the good in any situation or person.

If Kay could only post one tweet what would she say?

Somehow today I boarded a train with a one way ticket to crazyville!

Do you ever take real qualities of people close to you to craft your characters?

All the time. People in our lives make for great character studies and help us to hone in to our characters better to understand how they would react in certain real life situations.

Are there any aspects to writing teen fiction that you find challenging?

Melissa: Keeping the violence at a minimum and keeping it tasteful for everyone of all ages.

Crystal: I think as I went through writing the book I struggled constantly with remembering what I thought was cool to read as a teenager and what I would want my girls reading as teenagers. I think I played it safe in this book while starting the series compared to some of the other young adult books I have read lately but my readers shouldn’t be surprised if certain aspects of the storyline escalated in the sequel. Finding the happy balance as to what teens want to read and what parental figures think they should read and trying to hop between those two ideals is hard.

What are your top three reasons for writing teen fiction?

1)      Who doesn’t enjoy reliving that moment of first love? To me it’s even better to write about than to read about it. The way your heart flutters in your chest. Your palms get sweaty and your tongue ties in what seems to be a thousand knots. It’s of course nice to write about these scenarios now that I no longer live them. Ha!

2)      Teenagers and young adults have a great sense of humor that sometimes as adults we lose. We like to live in that sense of humor if it’s possible. Of course that leads to our husbands and parents still calling us juvenile from time to time when we play a prank or crack a joke they don’t get, but hey – it’s fun!

3)      Imagination still roams free in the young. I think it unfortunately dies a little as people get older and reality sets in. It’s fun to write to a crowd of readers that I think still has the off the charts imaginative world that I sometimes live in my head.

What is the one thing you want to caution readers to keep in mind while reading The Burning Star?

It is fiction, but some of the circumstances or experiences in which Kay and Kira finds themselves in are all based on some variance of truth. They’re teenagers living with drastic things threatening to change their lives. They have to make choices good and bad that will forever change their way of life but they also can’t let the chance to finally live slip by.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Melissa: Shelly Laurenston books and chocolate, and sweet tea! Coffee, Coffee, Coffee! OOOhhhh Transformers movies. (Yes I am a geek – and proud too).

Crystal: Chocolate cake, coffee, brownies, books, smores, great movies (like Transformers – my daughter loves Bumblebee), and hot chocolate. Anyone notice a pattern here? Move over cookie monster.  The chocolate monster is now in town!

What is next in the works for you?

At the moment we are working on two other books for two different series before we continue writing on the sequel to The Burning Star, which Crystal has already started, called The Frozen Star. We are branching out into the adult paranormal and contemporary romance genres. One book is titled Secret Maneuvers and is the start to our Ex Ops series about a black ops type group secretly run by the CIA with very alpha like heroes and the woman that love them. (Or want to strangle them depending on the situation) The other novel is titled Big Bad Bite and is the start of the Big Bad Bite series starring all kinds of fun supernatural characters and their crazy love lives.

Author Bio:

Jessie Lane is the writing team of Crystal Leo and Melissa Pahl. The two sister-in-laws share a great love of breath-taking romance, cliff hanging suspense, and out-of-this-world characters that demand your attention or threaten to slap you around until you do pay attention to them. Because really, it is ALL about the characters.

When not loosing themselves in a story they remember they have real lives. Crystal lives in Kentucky with her husband and two little girls who plot daily the many ways they can drive their poor mother crazy. At the end of the day Crystal then calls Melissa and threatens to ship her two nieces to their favorite Aunt with lots of air holes punched through their box. Melissa answers Crystal’s crazed calls in Washington state where she lives with her husband and big furry baby of a Rottweiler named Yuffie and reminds her that children are not shippable.

This is their first novel but they are all geared up and excited to be releasing other projects soon!

Blurb: She'll have to believe the unbelievable to survive.

The doctors have told Kay that she will die before she reaches her eighteenth birthday. Her mother’s determination to save her life leads them to a move outside of Asheville, NC to a new set of cancer specialists in the hopes to help her. But it’s not what Kay and her Mom find in the doctor’s offices in Asheville that lead them on the journey to save her before time runs out. It’s what Kay finds in the woods outside of Asheville, and an inhumanly gorgeous guy named Ryan, instead.

Myths and fairy tales come to life before Kay’s eyes, bringing her closer to the ultimate cure if she can stay alive long enough to get there. And if the cancer doesn’t kill her before she finds the cure the secrets her mother has hidden from her may be the beginning of the end.

Can she reach her destiny before tragedy strikes?

Excerpt:

I stood there frozen knowing that I would probably die because of this wretched creature. All of a sudden I saw the quick movement of an arm bringing down the point of the knife slicing towards the large creature’s skull. The animal’s enraged screams ripped through the woods around us. My brain tried to analyze what was happening before me I stood as still as a statue and watched as the monster started crumbling away. That’s right, I said crumbling. Like something that had been burnt from the inside out and then fell apart, it was just disintegrating into nothing. This can’t be real. I looked up from the ashes into the face of an angel. No, he’s not an angel, he’s just a guy right? He was staring at me like he had just seen me sprout a second head and I was staring at him like I was about to scream again and that’s when I fainted. At least I didn’t scream again, right?

When I opened my eyes to see his two ethereal blue eyes staring back into mine my head felt like it might split in two from a raging headache. “Are you okay?” his strong but sweet voice whispered.

But before I could stop myself from saying anything ridiculous I replied, “Are you an angel? Did I finally die and go to heaven?”

He bellowed a laugh and I blushed a shade that was more than likely lobster red. I really just didn’t say that did I? Stupid, stupid, stupid Kay. I smacked myself in the forehead and tried to hide my face. That’s a great way to make a first impression to an extremely hot guy. Let’s just faint like an air headed girl, which I am not, and then wake up asking stupid questions. And then that’s when it hit me. The past few moments of events flooded my brain again and I started to panic. “Wait, wait a minute! What was that thing and how in the world did it just, just…”

“The dog? I’m sorry to tell you I had to cut it with my knife to scare it away. It wasn’t a mortal wound though. He took off through the woods in an escape. Sorry if you’re one of those animal lovers, but I was afraid it might kill one of us.”

I shook my head to try and clear it. “No, no, no, no. That was no dog. Well I mean, it was at first, but then it became something else. It was black, and huge, and had those red eyes…” And before I finished my sentence I looked up at him to see complete shock and amazement on his face. I had never seen anyone look so bewildered. “Don’t look at me like that! I know what I saw! Now what was that thing and what happened to it at the end. It didn’t run off, I saw you kill it. And I would point to the body to prove it, but it; well it fell apart or something.”

And in just a split second the shock had disappeared from his handsome face and was replaced by something more masked and calculating. “I’m sorry. You’re quite mistaken. I didn’t kill it. I only wounded it. And it was a dog. Are you sure you didn’t hit your head or something? I’m afraid you might be having some kind of hallucinations of some kind.” Somehow, when he said it, it didn’t seem as scary or grotesque as it did when I played what I thought I saw back in my head.
