Review
Hiding her secret past allowed Charlotte Wellington to
become a well-known defense attorney. However, secrets have a way of coming out
when one least expects it. Charlotte grew up, with her sister, in a carnival
doing readings for customers. When her sister is brutally murdered, Charlotte
leaves the carnival and her secret life behind.
Her two worlds come crashing down when her stepfather, Grady, arrives in
town with the carnival asking for Charlotte’s help.
Detective Daniel Rokov and his colleagues are working a case
that shocks the most harden detectives. The brutality of this serial killer has
links, unknown to Daniel at the time, to Charlotte’s sister. His tenacity to find the truth leads him to
the carnival and his on again off again relationship with Charlotte. Daniel must make a hard decision, delve into
the past of the woman he loves to find the serial killer or trust her to tell
him the truth.
Mary Barton weaves an interesting mystery full of twist and
turns. Although some of the twist were a bit contrived and rushed, the back-story
on Charlotte is enough to keep the reader interested. The story is a page-turner;
yet, the characters seem to run together leaving the reader wondering which
character Burton was referring. Overall,
Before She Dies is a worthwhile read, which mystery fans can enjoy.
