NRR: How do you organize writing
with your daughter, Kristen? Does it ever become a classic mother, daughter
battle over the direction the story should go?
PC: Kristin and I don’t actually
“write” the books together. I write them and Kristin serves as my teen
voice editor. She helps me keep the kids real. So, nope, no
battles. Kristin doesn't even know the plot until she gets the completed
manuscripts to go through. We don't really have mother/daughter battles
anyway. We've always been close and we don't like to be mad at each
other!
NRR: What is your preferred place to
write/ read?
PC: I prefer to write while I’m on
my treaddesk, so I literally walk and write at the same time. It helps me
to focus and is healthy. But the truth is that I can write almost
anywhere. I don't like it when a TV is on, though. It's weird that
a blaring television is more distracting to me than, say, a room full of high
school studen
NRR: Do you get a lot of spare time
for "pleasure reading"? What are you reading right now?
PC: I'm taking my little between
book break right now, so I'm reading like crazy (it's hard for me to read after
I'm about half way into a manuscript). Right now I just finished
listening to the audio of Nancy Pickard's fabulous THE SCENT OF RAIN AND LIGHTNING,
and I also just finished Jennifer Cruisie's MAYBE THIS TIME (loved it!).
I'm going to start reading Pat Conroy's MY READING LIFE - he's one of my
literary heroes! And tomorrow I'm swinging by the Borders on 21st Street
in Tulsa and getting another audio book for my car. I'm hoping they have
Diana Gabaldon's AN ECHO IN THE BONE in audio. I'll also check and see if
Christopher Moore has anything new out. Oh, and I haven't read Melissa
Marr's RADIANT SHADOWS yet, though it's sitting on my beside table...
NRR: How do you celebrate when one
of your books is released?
PC: The reality is there's no time
for celebration on release date! I always have a launch, and usually lots
of publicity appearances, interviews, and then a tour. I celebrate when I
turn in a manuscript - usually by buying myself a treat (when I turned in
BURNED I bought myself a fabulous dragon necklace by John Hardy), drinking way
too much champagne with friends I've missed while I've been in my Writer's
Cave, and watching LOTS of trash TV. And I read and read and read.
NRR: What would you say are some of
the enjoyments of being a author?
PC: I love to build worlds and tell
stories. It makes me happy and it keeps my brain relatively sane. I
also like being my own boss - I have deadlines and editors/publishers, but the
bottom line is I write the story I most want to read, and I'm in charge of
that. I also really like choosing my own work hours. I've always
preferred writing late at night, and I think waking up before 9:00 am is Just
Not Right.ts, but for me it's true.
